This is the way the world ends, Not with a bang, but a whimper. – T.S. Eliot, "The Hollow Men"
Subject 341275 was a soul brought back from the dead from the ashes of what was known as The Traitor, from the Third World War. Among the ravages of nuclear fallout, a small group of researchers finally rendered God irreverent by conquering his domain. The soul was implanted into an artificial body, and was heralded as the one shining beacon of hope in a world where the sun could not pierce the thick clouds that covered the sky, where cities lay in ruin, and billions of corpses scattered about the globe.
But things went horribly wrong. Subject 341275 did not remain docile for long. It killed. And then it escaped.
That was when The Beasts came. Creatures of nightmare, they stalked the shadows and the country side, terrorizing the few survivors, forcing them to retreat to the remains of once great cities, banding together in these havens. The Beasts came no further, repelled by these boundaries. They remained in the shadows of the wild, preying on the few surviving flora and fauna, and the occasional human that wandered past the protection of the city.
These outposts of civilization have learned to survive, to block the thought of The Beasts from their minds and try to endure their day to day lives. Things are not easy, of course. With the delicate balance of the natural world upset, food has become a precious commodity, and a good nights sleep as rare as the sun. Still, the race lives on.
Though, for how long, remains to be seen.
